Blackberry Smoke Oklahoma Concert reviews
Greatest Show Ever
Eight! There were eight guitar players on that stage at one point… Charlie Paul and Benji from BBS and then you had Allman and Betts, Plus the two guys from the opener band the Wild Feathers who were incredible PLUS Ally Venable in the jam too. Second half of the show was mostly covers of some classics which were best version ever eclipsing even the original in most cases. Tuesday’s Gone was one of these.
Let’s talk about Toyota Pavilion for a minute… Best AC / air circulation I’ve ever experienced at a show. The warehouse fans above actually created a good breeze and I was the most comfortable I have ever been at any concert.
My one and only disappointment was picking seats in the middle section on the chart and not understanding that row J was the very back of the seating. Then they closed the lawn prior to show time and let those people inside so their $20 tickets got basically the same view we got for much more. But I didn’t care once the music started.
The openers were The Wild Feathers and the vocals have to be heard live. Great band, perfect fit for the tour.
Allman Betts … they were like time capsules of their parents. Duane Betts looked like a younger version of his dad. Devon Allman was on par with his dad in their heyday… such a gripping southern tone to his voice, and he wrangled that other guitar like he was born to it.
Blackberry Smoke was the ultimate music spectacle… Charlie Starr flawless as usual.. Paul Jackson with the high harmonies and guitar, the dual rhythm section of Brit Turner on drums and Preston Holcomb on percussion, Benji Shanks’ slide licks and the concrete solid bass of Richard Turner.
Charlie said, “Slow down, we don’t have to be in a hurry. We’re gonna be here a while.” and they were. And since every song has a powerful ending I was frequently thinking to myself, “I hope this isn’t the last song.” several times and it wasn’t.
